8 Ideas for Supporting Social-Emotional Learning with Technology

It may sound counter-intuitive to pair technology with Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Technology is often thought of a being cold, hard, and calculated. How can it be used to teach such nuanced, tender topics like feelings and conflict resolution??
While you might not invite
RT-D2 to be a guest speaker on the power of emotions... the reality is, technology can be used as a tool for connection!
Keep in mind, technology should complement and enhance face-to-face interactions, rather than replace them. Balancing digital tools with personal connections is essential for effective SEL implementation. Each of the ideas in this post can be incorporated with other forms learning activities; like group discussions, hands on projects, and presentations.
Here are 8 different ways to support SEL with technology in in-person classrooms:
1. Digital Resources and Multimedia
Utilize multimedia resources like videos, audio clips, and interactive presentations to introduce and explore SEL concepts, providing visual and auditory stimuli for better
understanding.
2. Online Collaboration Tools
Foster collaboration and communication among students using online
platforms such as Google Docs, Padlet, or collaborative whiteboards. This promotes teamwork, empathy, and effective communication skills.
3. Digital Storytelling Tools
Incorporate digital storytelling platforms or software where students can express
their emotions, perspectives, and experiences using multimedia elements like images, videos, and sound. This encourages self-reflection and empathy.
4. SEL-focused Apps and Games
Introduce mobile apps or games that promote SEL skills and concepts.
These interactive tools help students develop emotional regulation, empathy, conflict resolution, and problem-solving abilities.
5. Online Reflection Journals or Blogs
Set up online platforms where students can document and share their
thoughts, feelings, and progress related to SEL. This fosters self-awareness, self-assessment, and self-reflection.
6. Video conferencing for Guest Speakers
Arrange video conferences with guest speakers who specialize in
SEL or have relevant experiences to share. This provides students an opportunity to engage with experts, ask questions, and gain real-world perspectives.
7. Digital Self-Assessment Tools
Implement digital self-assessment tools or surveys to help students assess
their social and emotional skills. These assessments provide personalized feedback, identify areas for growth, and guide goal-setting.
8. Digital portfolio or showcase
Encourage students to create digital portfolios or showcases to collect and
present evidence of their SEL growth. This includes samples of their work, reflections, self-assessments, and personal growth statements.
Technology is a powerful tool in the classroom that can be used to enhance learning in all areas- including SEL! Hopefully these ideas have inspired you to incorporate tech with Social Emotional Learning.
